Lumos

“Cause I'm living...living in the darkness”

Snarls. Yelps. Screams of pain. Dangling from the jaws of his father, he felt the soil brush against his feet and rump as he tried to tuck himself into a ball away from the ground. Eyes squeezed shut, as he had been told to do, he didn’t dare peek at the carnage he could hear around him. The young pup felt his rump bump roughly into the ground as his father stumbled, Lumos yelped softly. His father growled a warning, be quiet, it said. He wasn’t sure how far they ran, in his dream it felt like an eternity, his father ran and ran until he couldn’t any longer. Finally, Lumos was plopped on the ground, the hot breath of his father breathing on his neck. The gentle nudge of his mother finally caused his eyes to open, trembling form looking around. They were in a clearing and it was night, but dawn was fast approaching. He could see the purple tint of the sky changing colors and could almost feel the warmth of the sun already.

Time sped up, throwing him forward into the night his parents died. They were in a shallow den-like cavern, surrounded by soil and tree roots except for one opening. His parents were alert, outside of the den. Something was wrong. Heart raced, body trembled, nostrils flared. He could smell the other wolf, he could smell the death and blood. Lumos would whimper, breathing getting faster as he stared at the opening of the den, claws dug into the soil, anchoring him in place. The soil trembled beneath his paws, climbing over his feet before stopping. Snarls ensued, bodies collided, blood spilled. Silence followed. A stranger appeared in the entrance of the den and Lumos would scream, the ground shaking, dirt and stone falling around him protectively.

Safe in the den with Laxton, Lumos would whimper and twitch in his sleep, curling tightly into a ball, only to relax before tensing up and kicking out. Low rumbles vibrated in his throat followed by a scream and thrashing as he jolted up from his nightmare. Tears ran hot down his face as he gasped, backing into the safety of the den and soil. Instinctively the soil reached out protectively around his legs, building a wall between him and Laxton. The boy sobbed, shaking. He was tired of these nightmares. He was tired of reliving it.

Laxton

"Everyone has a purpose, everyone has a place."

Laxton was awoke by he puppies night fits. He stood up, shaking himself as he then curled himself up around the pup, licking his head affectionately. "Hey, Lumos, you're dreaming," he whispered into his ear softly as he continued to lick his head to attempt to wake him up gently. Reika was curled up in the back of the cave, observing them, but saying nothing to Laxton as she watched, but of course having plenty of silent thoughts about the situation.

Laxton didn't look for his familiar, as he had not even gotten used to the fact that he had one yet, but he knew very well how she felt about him taking in a pup, when he himself, was not familiar with the new world he was in. But he couldn't leave the poor thing to be alone and potentially die because he didn't have anyone to teach him how to survive, that wasn't in Laxton's nature.

He also viewed this as a way to start a new life in this land, as he also didn't think he'd be given an opportunity to potentially find a mate and have pups of his own. So he had no issues with taking Lumos in and raising him as his own. "Lumos, it's okay, we're in the cave, you're safe," he murmured to him softly.

“Cause I'm living...living in the darkness”

Trembling, panting heavily, the boy listened to Laxton’s soothing words. At first they made no difference to him, it took a lot of coaxing from Lumos himself before he finally began to listen. Slowly, he relaxed, but the earthen shield did not readily crumble- it held fast and strong. He was still terrified as the nightmare still lingered in his mind, but he would step forward anyway, paw scratching at the soil as if to tell it he was ready to come out, a few soft scratches and it began to crumble. As it fell away and Laxton became visible, his warmth a comfort, the boy would look up to his guardian, ears back and eyes large. “Sorry…I…” He shook his head, eyes closing tight for a moment before opening them again. Unsteadily he stepped forward, burrowing his face into the chest of his guardian  (if he allowed it). Sniffling, the youth would whimper softly, still trying to shake the sounds and images from his mind. “Will it stop?” He mumbled, hoping for a yes but there was heaviness in his gut telling him these nightmares would never end.

He’d yet to tell Laxton everything, only that his parents were gone, he didn’t explain in detail that he had been there, that he’d been running from shadows for almost a month before Laxton had found him.
