Her feet ached. The snow had made them numb, and they had grown raw and worn as she traveled. They stung and throbbed, now that she was on solid ground that wasn't downy with snow. The trek through the mountains left them bleeding and scraped, as though she'd never traveled this much in the entirety of her existence. However, truth be told, she'd had further journeys. She'd explored vast expanses for a large chunk of the first year and a half of her life, many endeavors of which had left her more heavily wrought with fatigue, thirst, and hunger than this. At least she'd found prey in the snow drifts. And the snow had helped to quench her thirst, no matter how cold it was. And yet, she was irked with the way her feet seemed to express that they'd never felt worse. Every step she took left the ground faintly tainted with her blood, her prints oozing and kissing the ground with a crimson overlay.

She moved silently. Her feet had only just recovered from the numb feeling, and it had become clear to her that she had been stumbling around quite noisily amidst her descent down the mountain. When her paws had found the first grasses of a valley thick with trees, she felt relieved. The air here was just a small bit warmer too, the biting cold cast away behind the shelter of the tall trees. It slipped through here and there where they spaced out, but it was much less bitter against her body as she moved between the large trunks and low hanging branches. Nyla’s empty white eyes glowed as she used the shadows to cloak her white markings, leaving her stars and forehead symbols hidden amidst the coverage of the dark.

The travel to Brisbane Valley took longer than necessary. The cold weather was not to Sasu’s liking. She coiled herself into the fur of her bonded despite Melantha’s wishes. The sensation of the scales against her skin left her muscles tense as her flight slowed down to glide over the opening of the valley. The sight of the valley below mustered a sigh from the woman that left a small condensed cloud.

A hiss echoed in her ears from the sudden tilt of her wing that had her body follow suit. The serpentine slithered from her position close to Melantha’s bosom upwards to the woman’s neck. A grunt of displeasure expelled with a flare of her nostrils from the familiar’s movement before she tucked her wings close to her momentarily to hasten her pace to the ground. Sasu gradually tightened her grip on the neckband in fright as it began to put pressure on Melantha’s throat. “Sasu—“ A brief murmur left the woman’s lips as jaws were left unhinged while eyes closed unconsciously as her lungs burned from the sudden loss of air.

Pain flashed between the bond before the viper loosened her hold enough for Melantha to catch her breath.

With a flutter of lashes, eyes widened at the sight of her quickly approaching the terrain. A click of her tongue, Melantha opened her wings in a rapid session with her tail fanned outwards behind her. Breath left the duo as their plummet came to a sudden halt before scaled limbs outstretched to have contact with the earth. Melantha sucked in air through her nostrils at the abrupt sensation of the cold seeping into her from the pads of her feet. Talons gave some traction in the snow as she skidded briefly before limbs stumbled over one another. Melantha fell into a heap with Sasu coiled around the accessory that adorned her neck. “CAREFUL, BLOOD.” Sasu’s forked tongue flickered in the air as a slight taste of copper filled the air. Melantha’s eyes hooded for a moment as she slowly pulled herself to her feet. Wings flapped in indignation before she shook the snow that clung to her underbelly. Golden eyes glanced downward to catch sight of faint bloodied indentions in the snow.

“Another’s.” A soft hum left her vocals as she declared. The shape of the indent was not her own. Blood was something she undeniably would have felt. The only thing she was able to perceive was the frigid air and the weight of her familiar on her neck. Nose tilted down to take in the scent of the sanguine fluid. A swift flex of her toes, Melantha meandered her way forward with her large, feathered appendages close to her side.

Lips pursed as Melantha’s head tilted to the right as the scent she was following seemed to stop. A click of her tongue, she slinked off to her right as her eyes squinted to fleetingly identify a silver luminosity to her left. Eyes blinked rapidly as she turned her head to full gaze at the glow. “Ah,” A soft mutter to herself as golden eyes locked with silver. The other’s gaze left her wanting to see more of the being. “Why do you veil yourself, Darling?”

It was quiet here, even with the chirping of birds here and there. She had to admit, they weren't as vocal during colder weather, or at least not in this particular forest. It made Nyla all the more cautious, her calculated steps slow and silent as she navigated the unfamiliar trees. A strange noise suddenly graced her ears ─ or was it her head? A soft but threatening sound, almost like water filling her sense of hearing, or perhaps the sound that dry ice might make while it plumed, if it could make any noise at all. Her attention swayed off to her left as she scanned her surroundings, tucking herself up against one of the trunks as a quartet of legs suddenly carried a large wing just past her. Nyla arched her back, watching from under the branches that cradled her, twisting her head and taking in the abundant detail of the wolf. A rainbow of hues decorated the edges of sleek feathers and lush black fur, and what was this, a shimmering plate of luscious gold wrapped snugly around the stranger's neck.

Nyla's eyes lingered on the accessory until she noticed a pattern change that turned into a mottled looking serpent. Thin black ears stood up tall on her head and Nyla immediately bore her teeth in silent defense as the woman turned to look down at her. “Why do you veil yourself, Darling?” she asked, Nyla's lips lowering back down over her pearly whites as she coiled around the opposite side of the trunk, leaving it between her and the avian female. It was a peculiar question, one who's answer might be quite obvious once Nyla's next words tumbled out of her mouth. "I'm not familiar with this place," the starry vixen's lofty trill floated out into the frigid air. Nyla studied the stranger's face as she lingered in the shadows, her eyes flickering once back to the shining metal around her throat that seemed to call out to the white-eyed devil. "Do you know where we are?" she kept her voice quiet, but her tone had changed into something a bit more relaxed after realizing this creature might be able to help her.

The winged woman’s approach did not appear to be welcomed. A flash of fang from the other caused the viper wrapped around her collar to hiss in displeasure at the small act. “RUDE,” Another hiss left the familiar’s tongue as Melantha cleared her throat to turn her head to her right in order to glare at the swaying serpent. "SORRY, LOVE." Voice soft as she swiveled her head around to face the cloaked being once more.

A frown tugged at her lips as she caught sight of the white, luminous eyes from behind the base of a tree’s trunk. A barrier created between the two as elongated cartilage twirled forward to catch the girl’s words. "HM," A murmur to herself as she unconsciously shifted from one foot to the other. Melantha had to stop herself from wanting to get closer to the girl. A small smile pulled the corners of her lips upwards as she caught the girl glancing down to her neck. "YOU LIKE?" Referring to the golden-plated accessory around her throat. She took a single step forward as she craned her head skyward to give the girl a better view if she desired.

"YES," A whisper as she winked playfully at the white-eyed girl. "THIS," Melantha paused while she raised her left foreleg in a sweeping motion. "IS
BRISBANE VALLEY, DEAR."
A light utter of sound from lips as she ambled forward, the low hanging branches pulling and scratching at her fur as she passed. "COME, COME," Melantha called over her shoulder in an effort to beckon her to follow while she meandered her way out of the forest.
