After the storm, Hickory had decided that beaches were not meant for him. Safety was among the trees, where the waters couldn’t roll up and drag people away. No, it had been too disturbing, the ideas. Instead, he headed inland, passing close to mountains and through some plains. He had restocked his herbs, getting rid of the ones that had been ruined by the rains. Now he had found himself among large trees that towered over him for what felt like miles.

This place felt special, somehow touched by the magic of Nidria. It felt like it was welcoming Hickory, despite the fact that he thought he shouldn’t be. The gods had blessed him with finding a rabbit to snack on as he wound around the trunks of the trees. There were herbs here he did not recognize, and he was sniffing them, trying to compare them to what he already knew. Maybe if he stayed here a few days, he could experiment - but he felt like this place was only for passing through.

As the sun was hiding among the trees, he finally laid down. It was only late afternoon, but the branches blotted out the sun as if it was already dusk. The red boy felt Yvette, his bat familiar, took off from his neck. She hung upside from one of the branches above him, waiting for the dark to go out hunting. Hickory found a good dip in the earth between the roots of a tree, and laid. “What do you think, Yvette? This place is interesting.” He could hear the flapping of her wings, as she settled down further. A calm was overtaking him, as he silently looked at the trees around him.

Steps were soft and uneven. Bryker was favoring one of his back legs, which had been scraped and bruised when the large wave had swept him and Sage across the bay. Thankfully Manny had been there to keep him from bashing into tree trunks or whatever else- but Sage had not been that lucky. The wolf had been injured before, but some time during the flood one of his horns had been snapped. Bryker winced at the thought, wondering if it had been like a bone breaking. He shivered uncomfortably. He did not want to imagine what that must have felt like.

But he had a lot of respect for the pastel colored wolf. He had returned to give more to Atlahua when Bryker had called him back, and had not faltered when the wave came crashing down. It had impressed Bryker so much that he had offered Sage a place in the coven. The wolf seemed interested, and had agreed to head back to Thatcher Woods with him. Bryker was out alone at this moment, trying to find something to eat. Sage was walking decently, but Bryker had more energy and had offered to catch something if he could find it.

The smell of blood flared his nostrils. He licked his lips. Food?

He hesitated though. Wolves were not the only predators in Nidria. What if it was something else? He took several steps in the direction he had sensed the new smell and breathed deeper. Smelled like wolf. It was probably okay, right?

He hesitated again. Lynus' voice entered his head, warning him to be careful. The wolf flicked his ears back, then forward again, finally deciding it might be worth it to investigate. If he found himself in real danger, he felt confident he could escape and get back to Sage quick enough.

So the tan wolf set off. He came across the kill site and was disappointed to find only bone scraps being picked at by a couple ravens. Frowning, he growled and stepped forward, startling the birds and making them hop back. He bared his fangs at them and they tilted their heads, eyeing him back. Bryker snapped his jaws but the birds did not seem frightened. Humph. Bryker flicked his ears and tail, looking down at the rabbit bones. They were better than nothing. He lowered his head and started trying to gather the biggest pieces.

It was Yvette who warned Hickory that someone was close by. The bat could see further from among the branches, and it made a shiver go up Hickory’s spine. He instantly felt his fear dripping magic around him, and tried to press further into the ground, using his shadow manipulation to try and disappear. But he let his front eyes peer over the roots, looking further down the slope. In the darkness there was a figure, snuffing at the ground. Was it dangerous?

Yvette shook her wings out and took flight, hovering over the area to try and peer closer. She was the one that checked things out and reported back; this was merely routine for them. As she dipped back towards the roots he rested between, she spoke softly to him, explaining that it was another wolf - expected - but his walking was funny. That was usually a sign of something bad. Despite his fear, Hickory crept softly from the roots, hiding in the shadows with his magic. The other might be feeling his uncontrolled fear magic, maybe a pinprick of something is not okay.

Hickory lowered himself to the floor, creeping forwards. A ray of sun hit well enough that he could make out the face, see how battered the other was. Softly, he would speak, revealing only his front face, the rest still hiding in the shadows. “A-are you o-okay?” It came out as a whisper, and he would be looking up at the other with wide, anxious yellow eyes. It was his job to help others, and he felt the pull, but there was also the fear churning in his belly.

Bryker's ears caught the sounds of flapping overhead. He glanced upwards, spying something small and dark in the trees. It moved quickly though, and so long as it did not bother him he did not care too much. He refocused, gathering up the bones. Once he had the larger ones in a small pile, he gazed at them with even more disappointment. Maybe he should move on. This was barely anything, and probably not worth his time to bring something so meager back to Sage. Besides, how would that look? Until the coven had its paws underneath it, Bryker was responsible for everyone. How would it look if he could not provide for those who needed it? The wolf let out a sigh. He stared at the bones. He looked through the tall trees, halfheartedly expecting a deer or raccoon or something to walk out in front of him and rescue him from the dilemma. Should he leave and potentially find nothing? Or take these and regret not taking the risk to find something better?

Ears suddenly flicked, keen audits catching footsteps. Head turned swiftly to a soft sound, calling out to him. It was wolf, hidden mostly by shadows. But by the way the light his the creature he could tell it was light in color, with bright eyes staring back at him. But the rest was shrouded in mysterious darkness.

"I'm fine." he said, his voice steady. He gently lowered his injured leg to the ground, feigning putting weight on it so as to appear as he had said. This was a stranger. Unknown creatures were not to be trusted. But that did not mean Bryker did not have manners. "But thank you for asking." His long, fluffy tail gave a few sways. "I'm not from around here. Do you know where some water is?" he asked. Partly because he would like the drink, but also because if he could find water he had a better chance of catching something to eat.

Hickory was hyper-focusing, looking at the land all around him - plus, with his extra sets of eyes, he could see more than a usual wolf. The two were close in height if Hickory would stand taller, but the other was thicker, more bulky, but almost anyone was bulky compared to him. If they were to fight, Hickory would not stand a chance. This kept him from moving forward. While he may be showing kindness, it didn’t mean it would be returned.

When the stranger said he was okay, his eyes flicked to the other’s hind leg as he put his weight on it. Without much notice, he lifted his eyebrows a little, but then quickly fixed his face to be more emotionless. He had seen it, and could guess that the stranger did not want to appear weak. Hickory kind of understood, but also felt a tinge of annoyance. “Oh.” His voice was soft, a small touch of disappointment. It had been a while since he had been able to use his acquired skills.

W-water? Y-yes.” Without much movement on his part, he ever so slightly turned his faces towards the trees further away. “A small puddle, y-yes, from the storm.” He had drinken from it earlier. The water was clean enough. “I-I can take you th-there.” Hickory offered. The direction had been rather vague, not wanting to expose his faces with his movements. But he could slip into the shadows and lead the other there, most likely safely.
